Bullock divorce raises questions about adoption
Sandra Bullock Online
|
Sandra Bullock’s revelation that she is adopting a 3½-month-old baby raises questions about what happens when a couple divorces while an adoption is in progress.
“In almost every case of adoption of a newborn in this country today, the new parent is chosen by the birth parent,” says Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute. And though most birth parents probably would choose a married couple, Pertman says, many types of families are chosen for adoption today, and divorce may not signal the end of an adoption process.
“For almost all states, the standard is: Is the adoption in the best interests of the child?” says Bonnie Rabin, a New York trial lawyer with experience in adoption cases. Considering the tabloid and entertainment magazine reports of infidelity by Jesse James, “it’s unlikely the court is going to find that anyone other than (Bullock) doing it alone would be in the child’s best interest.”
The lag between baby Louis’ arrival in the Bullock household in January and Wednesday’s announcement is common, Rabin says: Courts want to study the child in the custody of the person or family seeking to adopt. The length of time between guardianship and final adoption varies according to state and adoption type.
All these machinations being kept under wraps for so long is “extraordinary,” Rabin says. Bullock “must have so many people around her who wanted to make sure this adoption could go through without a lot of drama.”

You go! And nvever go back! You’ve mad the best decision of your life. You had NOTHING do to with the divorce…You only had love in your hear for the one person who you trusted and Louis trusted you. Do the right thing…No Jesse…ever again. Be smart. He was making you look stupid. May the force be with you. A loving fan
I heard today that Sandra Bullock is adopting a baby. How wonderful for her!!!!! But why is the media or people judging her as to whether she will be a good mom or not?? None of their F*****g business. She seems to be an ALL together person with strong family values. I AM ONE THAT COMPLETELY ADMIRES HER, ESPECIALLY FOR LEAVING JESSI JAMES IMMEDIATELY. Why is the press picking on her as to the color of the baby–are we not ALL human??? Hello has this not been established yet!! And I really think it is great that she is adopting from our own country USA!!! Their are so many babies here that need adopting but everyone seems to go to foreign countries. I admire Sandra Bullock for ALL she is!!!!!!! A very caring fan
Sandra did what any all together woman does when cheated on, she left the scum. I tip my hat to her for adopting a US child instead of a foreign child. Childern are childern but we have our own to care for here in the USA. I think it is wonderful that she and Loouis are going to live in New Orleans, So he will know who he is and where he came from. Anyone who doubts Sandra will be a good mom look at how Jesse’s childern look at her. Think about it she kept Louis out of the spot light for how long and is allowing us to see him on her terms. this screams MOMMY material to me.
A very caring and devoted fan
Sandra to me I think you are a great actress and beautiful. My only advice is please Please work out your marriage through thick and thin he needs you more than anything. If you still love him help him. You have the upper hand and he is down. Divorce is so high you can change that and show the world that people always deserve a second chance. Im sure he will be a better husband a faithful one and both of you will get pass this and move on to a better and productive life. I know cause I did it and never will ever cheat till today I regret it everyday and never goes away that is my punishment and so it will be his. Promise you will be happier second time around and maybe he needs you too. It takes two.
